Motorola Reports Slight Loss on Flat Revenue As Phone Sales Dip

The number of phones that Motorola sold decreased from last year as the company lost $ 80 million on flat revenue, citing an increasingly competitive market.

For Motorola, the good news was that the number of smartphones the company sold increased, from 4.9 million a year ago to 5.3 million during the fourth quarter of 2011. In total, Motorola sold 10.5 million mobile devices, including 5 million feature phones and 200,000 tablets.

But Motorola’s mobile devices business unit reported a net loss of $ 70 million on revenue of $ 2.5 billion, up 5 percent from a year ago.
