News from Jackson Clarion Ledger:

Nokia has started to fight back with its smartphone platform. I think it has a good chance of gaining more prominence in the mobile marketplace.

It seemed Nokia stayed with its Symbian operating system too long, while Apple came along with its iOS and then Google’s Android operating system arrived to steal what was left of the show.

If you go back a few years, Nokia, along with Motorola and BlackBerry, were the mainstays among mobile phones. We all generally had one of the three with a physical keyboard or in a clamshell style. They were virtually indestructible.

Nokia’s recent devices are good looking and interesting, with a new OS backed by Microsoft. But they are still unproven in the marketplace and will have a lot of competition from the current crop of smartphones whose technology has kept improving over the past few years.

Key vendors leading the push into LTE phones will include HTC Corp (宏達電), Apple Inc, Samsung Electronics Co, LG Electronics Inc, Nokia Oyj, Motorola Mobility Holdings Inc, Pantech Co and Fujitsu Ltd, it added.

“The mobile industry is entering a breakout year for 4G LTE technology,” Strategy Analytics executive director Neil Mawston said in a report. “LTE has quickly become a high-growth, high-value market that no operator, service developer, device vendor or component maker can afford to ignore.”

However, because the LTE mobile phone segment will expand at a rapid rate this year, there will undoubtedly be growing pains in this early phase, Strategy Analytics said.

Many LTE cellphones and data plans will be relatively expensive, which means operators will need to invest in generous subsidies to make 4G more affordable for sub…………… continues on Taipei Times
